Steve Adler is the former Mayor of Austin, Texas, serving from January 6, 2015, to January 6, 2023. Born on March 23, 1956, in Washington, D.C., he earned a B.A. from Princeton University and a J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law. Adler practiced civil rights and eminent domain law for over three decades before entering public service. He co-founded the law firm Barron & Adler, LLP, and served as chief of staff and general counsel to Texas State Senator Eliot Shapleigh from 1997 to 2005.
As mayor, Adler focused on addressing Austin's affordability crisis and improving mobility. He was instrumental in implementing the city's transition to a 10-1 council system, aiming to enhance representation for Austin's diverse communities. Under his leadership, the city passed significant mobility and affordable housing bonds, marking the largest investments in these areas in Austin's history. Adler also advocated for equity and inclusion, establishing the city's first Chief Equity Officer position and supporting initiatives like Mayors Organized for Reparations and Equity (MORE).
Since leaving office, Adler has remained engaged in civic and global dialogues. He has participated in international forums, such as the International Media Summit in Riyadh, discussing Austin's brand and its role in global innovation ecosystems.
